Scott and Shelley MacDonald bid on and won a perch trip at the annual Corn Hole Tournament at Avon Lake UCC where we all go to church together. Due to the lack of any decent perch reports in our area of Lake Erie, I took the family out for walleye instead. As we started out to the lake they started teasing me. They had been unsuccessful on every fishing trip they had ever been on. They were saying that “Captain Moses has his work cut out for him!”
Their schedule only allowed for four hours of fishing, so I didn’t have much time to end the bad karma. I started to put the planer boards out beginning with the starboard side. Then turned and put out the port side. I turned back and the starboard board had broken away and was floating farther and farther behind me. We turned the boat around and retrieved the board, as they were all laughing and saying,”we told you so.” Shelley insisted they wouldn’t catch a fish. Well, in 4 short hours, they managed to catch sheepshead, white bass, throw back a bunch of walleyes that were not legal size and still managed to box 10 beautiful walleye. They were an awesome crew and they have already enjoyed some cooked on the grill. Better to be lucky than good!
