I get a lot of requests from families wanting to bringing children out for a Lake Erie fishing charter. Being a grandfather to ten, there is nothing I enjoy more than seeing a child catch that first perch or walleye. My experience suggest that the younger the kids are the shorter their attention spans. They are usually ready to head back long before their parents are and some decide to venture down to play in the cabin. The cabin is not a safe place for kids when the boat is rocking, given that is where most of the equipment is stored including hooks and knives. I have set an age limit of 8 years old for fishing, and each child must have at least one adult to watch over him or her. My crew and I are non-stop working to try and fill the cooler and there are a lot of things on a boat that could injure an unsupervised child. I feel awful when my customers spend good money for a fishing trip only to have it cut short because their kids are not yet ready. My rules are only meant to protect your safety and enjoyment!
