Dog Days of August? Captain Moses doesn’t think so. At least not this year!
All summer long the question concerning everybody has been“What happened to the Lake Erie perch?!” “Have they gone the way of the Blue Pike?”
Rumors were flying that the netters got them all. My favorite speculation was that “all the monster walleye are eating them.” Usually this time of year the bite starts to get a little tougher on walleye fishing and perch are usually still a few weeks away.
The cooler spring and summer have kept a large percentage of the walleye under 5 lbs., but there are still quite a few Fish Ohio 28” >8-pound walleyes from the Islands to Cleveland. Lorain is definitely a hot spot with the majority of walleye moving a few miles further off shore but on the same east-west numbers.
To add to the excitement the perch have returned early and with some decent size to them. A lot of my friends have already said, “I’m perch fishing from now on.”
