Saturday the Bruas from Chicago made it to town on Friday evening for two days of Lake Erie fishing. We started out trolling for walleye just after 6am running a variety of presentations and only had 5 in the cooler at 10:00. Ryan, my son and first mate, and I made some adjustments and soon the walleye were coming in along with 11 channel Catfish and some world class sheepshead. We managed to pull their 5 limits plus a few bonus fish pulling lines in. We went from 27 walleye to 33 total before the last rod came in. Lost quite a few at the back of the boat but that happens on all charters.
Grandpa Roger sat back under the hard top and watched as his sons and grandsons and my grandson Kaya had non-stop action catching fish after fish. Just as we were taking down rods one of the board rods on the starboard side bent over like it snagged on the bottom or a big sheepshead was on the line. Roger jumped up out of his chair which looked like a cattle stampede knocking kids and sons out of the way yelling “I got this one”. Well I may have embellished the knocking kids out of the way part, but it was one of the funniest things I have seen on my boat. He must have had a feeling about that fish because it turned out to be the biggest fish of the day, a Fish Ohio 29” hawg.
The day was filled with jabbing back and forth between family and old friends from Chicago, where Ryan and his family lived for a couple of years. The crew was awesome and a special hats off to Matt who planned the trip; what an awesome dad and fantastic 2nd mate. Rob, well Rob is Rob…LOL! Baris with his long blonde hair was focused the whole day on catching fish. He just reeled in a nice walleye and before we could get it out of the net he yelled “there’s one as another board rod bent over.” Ty his older brother was also “all in” and they had a ball catching their limit of walleye along with the rest of the group.
Sunday was a nice relaxing change for everyone. Got to the boat at 8:30 to try for some yellow perch. Started out with Baris having the hot hand. He had 4 perch before anyone on the boat had caught a fish. The east wind that had all the perch fishermen and fisherwomen frustrated as the perch bite the day before was fantastic. We moved 3 times and then a fellow captain, Flash, called us in as he and his young son were having a decent bite going. We set anchor and soon everyone on the boat was catching beautiful yellow perch. The bite was still going strong and really picking up as the wind strengthened and started to come from the NE just when we pulled anchor. But the Bruas wanted to get back to Chicago at a decent hour. They took home 4 gallon bags of Walleye fillets and a gallon bag of perch fillets.
Thanks Ryan and Nikki for sharing your house with them and for the wonderful walleye fry on Friday night when they arrived. What great neighbors I have. 🙂
Love you up to God and back,
Captain Moses
