Marcia contacted me months ago to purchase a Father’s Day gift certificate for a walleye trip for her husband Joe, daughter Maddi, heading off to college in a month and their son Jackson. The first date was cancelled because of weather. Today (Sunday) was almost cancelled because of the tough fishing the day before with no wind and bugs all over us and the boat. I called Joe and really didn’t want to disappoint them again but explained what my experience has been and wanted to give him the option of rescheduling because the forecast was high 90s and little wind. I didn’t have any dates available until September. Joe said that wouldn’t work because Maddi would be at college. We agreed to go for it. I asked them to come earlier and they were there right on time. As we pulled out of the marina, we were greeted by another beautiful sunrise and to my surprise a good walleye chop with a SW wind and no bugs. We headed out and knowing the walleye have been moving to deeper water. We went 10 miles before setting lines. We couldn’t get lines in the water fast enough as the fish attacked our lures as soon as we put them out. We even caught a double that we brought in in the same net. The crew was fantastic! They set lines on the boards, set dipsies, netted all the fish and we all just had a blast. We had their 18 limit of walleye, several white bass and a bonus 11 inch yellow perch. All were ready to pull lines and get back to shore as we ended up 15 miles north and hitting some pretty decent waves. They are part of my Avon Lake United Church of Christ family and since the services have been online since the covid-19 breakout we missed seeing each other. It was an awesome, wonderful day with an amazing family. Better to be lucky and blessed than good!
