I had my good friend Anthony out about a month ago. 3 of us managed a boat limit of 18. Anthony asked me if we could try for perch the next time we go out fishing. I told him there hasn’t been any good reports but I also wanted to give it a try. A week ago Sunday, the two of us headed out to an area that a few Captains told me that they had caught some nice perch while trolling for walleye. We set the anchor and waited 30 minutes. Nothing. We moved another four times and spent two hours without a perch. We did catch some small walleye that were about 6″ long. 😕 We released them gently without touching them. You shouldn’t touch the skin of walleye when you release them, because you can remove the slime that protects their skin and they can die. We gave up on perch fishing and tried drifting for walleye. Still nothing. After a year of limit after limit with my charters, I asked Anthony if he wanted to troll for walleye. We only had an hour because Anthony wanted to get home to watch the Cleveland Browns game. I put out four dipsies in hopes of catching Anthony a few walleye for dinner. We ended up catching his limit of 6 and I caught a bonus walleye pulling in the lines. Great day with my buddy! Better to be lucky than good.
