Brian showed up with his father, Mark, Tom and his son Andrew for their first walley fishing trip on Lake Erie. They had seen all my posts, heard about the fantastic fishing and expected the bonanza to continue. We went to my regular spot and were marking a lot of fish but someone turned the light switch off. I called my fellow captains that were out and every one was saying the same thing. The walleye bite had finally shut off or at least slowed down. A lot of bait has shown up and the walleye are gorging on the baby shad, pinhead minnows and bug hatches. The three nights of full moon had given them the light they needed to see the feast before them. Not panicking, I actually enjoy this moment more than anything. I have to work to figure them out and get them to bite. I began changing bait, color, size and speed until a pattern emerged. I chose a bait that looked similar to what they were feeding on. Put it at the depth where I saw them on the fish finder and then we started to catch fish. It took twice as long to get their 24 walleye limit and even caught 4 bonus fish when pulling in lines. Retirement was over as I put in a full day of work. Lol. They headed back to KY with a cooler full of fish and said they would be back in September for another charter. Better to be lucky than good. 😊
